NHL 15 will hit stores worldwide this fall for Xbox One, PlayStation®4, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Full feature descriptions at the bottom of the release.

NHL 15 Features for Xbox One and PlayStation 4:

True Hockey Physics:

12 Player NHL Collision Physics – For the first time, real-world physics affect every player through every on-ice collision with the new 12 Player NHL® Collision Physics. Utilizing the power of the new consoles, and building off the critically-acclaimed NHL Collision Physics system, every player on the ice is governed by physics at all times. Feel the hard-hitting chaos of NHL hockey through true-to-life secondary collisions, net scrambles and player pileups, capturing the desperation of every shift.

Real Puck Physics – The puck is one of the most complex items in the game to authentically replicate and it finally gets its due in NHL 15. Completely rebuilt puck physics result in a more realistic feel to every puck interaction. Everything on the ice, including the ice surface itself, is live which leads to the unpredictable and authentic puck spins, rolls and bounces seen in a real NHL game.

The Next-Generation Hockey Player:

Authentic Player & Equipment Models – The Next Generation Hockey Player has been rebuilt from the ice up. Now player models have three distinct layers – the body, equipment, and jersey. Each layer interacts independently, making every contact with the puck or other players even more realistic. Dynamic Cloth technology adds an extra layer of realism as it reacts to the player’s movement as they explode up the ice, helping bring the speed of the game to life.

Unprecedented Player Likeness – Powered by the same technology that brought the most realistic representation of the athlete to EA SPORTS UFC, NHL 15 delivers groundbreaking player likeness, emotion and animation. From the strides a player takes to get across the ice to the emotion on their face after scoring a game-winning goal, the players are as real as they’ve ever been.

Superstar Skill Stick – Now all the tools of an NHL superstar are in your hands. The revolutionary Skill Stick has evolved to give even more control to the player. Protect the puck, receive passes without breaking stride, and discover an arsenal of new dekes, all with an intuitive right stick control scheme that is easy to use but packed with depth.

Vision AI – An elevated level of player intelligence, Vision AI features evolved awareness with players reading and reacting to potential plays. Scoring area recognition, pass anticipation, and enhanced team breakouts all improve the flow of the game.

NBC Sports Broadcast Package:

A New Commentary Team – New voices for a new generation. NHL 15 welcomes the NBC Sports commentary team of Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick and Eddie Olczyk to the broadcast booth. TSN analyst Ray Ferraro will provide game insights at ice level. Leveraging the same Vision AI foundation that the players have, and just like a live broadcast, Doc, Eddie and Ray will anticipate plays and ramp up their intensity to match the action on the ice with more than 35,000 lines of brand-new commentary.

NBC Sports Game Day Presentation – The most realistic broadcast package in a video game to-date is possible because of a new partnership with NBC Sports. Set the scene with the NHL on NBC crew welcoming you to the city during the game intros and immerse yourself in an experience that matches what you see on television with NHL on NBC graphics and branding.

Real Life Broadcast Integration – When we say Doc and Eddie are in the game, we mean really in the game. Taking commentary integration to the next level, NHL 15 will feature real world pre-game video commentary with Doc and Eddie. Set against NHL 15 in-game visuals, the result is a revolutionary step forward in sports videogames, where the lines between the real world of sport broadcast and the game are blurred.

Unrivalled In-Arena Experience:

Over 9,000 Crowd Models – NHL 15 sets a new standard in videogames with more than 9,000 individual crowd models with 4x the animations of previous generations. Take a look through the glass and you’ll see fans hold up signs with your name on them, costume wearing superfans, or even sections full of team rivals rooting against you.

Living Crowds – The crowd is alive. Feel the crowd behavior change after dropping the gloves, landing a big hit, or scoring a clutch goal. Individual behaviors are mapped to each person in the crowd, as they anticipate the play, taunt players, clap to music from the dynamic Jumbotron or even take a quick break from the action to snap a selfie and immortalize their experience.

Authentic Arenas – There is no feeling like being there, and we are giving you the best seats in the house. The power of the next-gen consoles finally allows the NHL franchise to capture every detail of an NHL arena. Unique arena elements from more than 19,000 seat capacities to lighting and player entrance tunnels are captured with a level of detail not possible on the previous generation. Now those home games will truly feel like home.

My Next Gen Choice Was Easy

IMG_0315

Here we are, the day of the launch of the PS4, and I have not even written about which console I got yet, but the picture above and the PS4 controller hands on impressions piece are a dead give-away.  So as I wait for the PS4 to come in, I wanted to write this piece and sort of explain why I choose this system over Xbox One, and what the plans on for the future.

Why PS4?

Well as you might already know, my current console is the PS3, and I enjoy playing on it. So when it came time to choose a Next Generation console I already had a solid reason to pick PS4 over whatever Microsoft had to offer. So when the time came to pre-order a console I had that in the bag but also at that point Microsoft was also saying how an online connection would be required to play on the Xbox One and that is one thing I didn’t want to do, partially because I didn’t fully have a grasp on what it meant. By online connection, did they mean be logged in to Xbox Live all the time? Or did they mean have a signal via wi-fi? That part kind of confused me in a sense, as smart as I like to think I am, there was a question about that. And since I play a lot of PSN and Xbox Live when I had the 360, I did not want to be committed to having to sign onto Xbox Live.

There were also other elements that factored into my purchasing decision. One being that I once had an original Xbox 360 and I ran into so many problems with it, it was more of a hassle to own the console than it was to keep it. I ended up trading it in since I wasn’t using it anymore after purchasing a PS3. Another one of the main reasons that I purchased a PS4, was I liked what I saw out of Sony’s E3 Press Conference, no restrictions that the Xbox One had at the time, and the price was what I was hoping for. Once the PS4 was said to cost $100 less than Xbox One I was sold. I mean sure that may sound like the cheap way out, but it wasn’t the biggest factor, but it certainly was the deciding factor.

The Games

At the time of the pre-order I had originally pre-ordered Battlefield 4 and Watch_Dogs. And obviously, that isn’t the line up I ended up with as Watch_Dogs was delayed until sometime in 2014. So that made me have to scramble to make more choices on launch day games.

What I ended up doing was buying Battlefield 4, and NBA 2k14 along with an extra controller. I also had Madden 25 pre-ordered but I canceled it once I realized that it was pretty much the same game I have on PS3. That isn’t to say Madden 25 is a bad game, I just don’t need or want two of them in my games shelf, I mean heck it’s full as it is.

There are actually two games on the PSN store I am considering trying out, one is Resogun and the other is one I wasn’t even looking at but it is called Blacklight: Retribution. These games are both free for PS+ members and both should be fine additions to any game library, especially if you didn’t pre-order many games.

The Apps

PS4 also comes with apps, the ones I will be looking at right off the bat will be Netflix, and NHL Gamecenter Live. Mainly NHL Gamecenter Live to see how stable it is, since the PS3 GCL app is good but suffers from buffering issues, otherwise it is a fantastic replacement for NHL Center Ice if you ever decided cable just wasn’t worth it.

The Future

While launch day games are sort of weak for PS4, there is a reason I kept the pre-order and it is future games. Games such as Watch_Dogs, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and MLB ’14 the Show will be great purchases in the future. Plus Madden ’15 or 26 however they choose to name it will probably be a solid addition to the PS4 and Xbox One’s line up in the summer time. Add on NHL ’15 and NBA 2k15 next fall and that could lead to some seriously good games on my radar.

However games that might not be on the radar now but could end up there such as Metal Gear Solid V and Infamous: Second Son.

Also in the future I can see myself investing in an Playstation Vita to check out the remote play and second screen functions offered on the PS4 link option on the Vita.

And probably once the Xbox One gets a price cut I’ll look into purchasing that as well to play some Xbox One exclusives such as Halo, and Forza 5.

Future Game Coverage Plans

The plan for coverage is still being finalized, you’ll definitely get reviews but when is still in the air and what games come first is still up for consideration since I have requests out for other games but no definitive answers at this point.

Long term I hope to get a feel for how the Vita and PS Camera work with the console and make use of its features. And eventually I would like to add an Xbox One to the mix so I can get more varied coverage for the site especially when it comes to Xbox One exclusives such as Forza Motorsport 5, Halo and Dead Rising 3.

I will also be looking at a couple apps to see if there are any performance issues/improvements and report my findings there. I will be mainly looking at  NHL Gamecenter Live, and Netflix since I am familiar with both on PS3.

Conclusion

Just because I picked up a PS4 over the Xbox One doesn’t mean I hate the Xbox One. Truth is that I’ve never played it, nor have I played the PS4 at the time of this writing. But considering the fact that I had issues with my old Xbox I was concerned with the quality of the launch Xbox One’s and I think I have a good reason to be considering how the Xbox 360 fared in the beginning stages.

While I say that I also want to make it known that I am aware of the PS4 launch issues, but Sony says it appears to be affecting just 0.4% of launch consoles, I feel terrible for the ones that have the issue, and I pray that these isolated incidents remain that way so other PS4 owners can enjoy their consoles on launch day and beyond. But these issues have me considering purchasing an extended warranty so that I can have some sort of protection should my PS4 bottom out past the original 12 month warranty that comes with the PS4 which is a purchase that I wasn’t planning on since I’ve been blessed with all of my Playstation’s lasting a long time to this point, so I hope that once I purchase this extended warranty, that I don’t need it. Surely that might sound like I wasted money, but I would have peace of mind knowing that I’d be covered.

In terms of the future? Outside of what’s listed above about the PS Camera, PS Vita, and a likely future purchase of Xbox One, I am pretty much thinking that the games will be a main focus from this point forward, and really if you think about it, that is how it should be.

PS4 Controller Quick Impressions

IMG_0321

The order for my extra PS4 controller actually came in yesterday, and it was a surprise because I had not seen anything to indicate it was on the way so imagine my surprise when it showed up. I was super excited to try it and test it out on a PS3 game to get a feel for it so I threw in NHL 14 to see if it worked, and it was pretty well functional, the joysticks did seem more responsive, even on the PS3.

The only buttons that did not work were the touchpad in the middle of the controller and the PS button which seems like of odd, but I am assuming that is because the PS4 home interface differs from the one PS3 has.

In terms of feel, I love the design, the feel of the controller as you are holding it, it has a smooth bottom making it comfortable to hold. The weight seemed about the same which is surprising considering the controller is a little bigger width-wise.

I love the new L2/R2 buttons, they are easier to reach and they have a little indentation which separates itself in terms of feel from the L1/R1 buttons which are both a little more round but flat like in the PS3 controller. The L2/R2 buttons reminded me why I loved the Xbox 360 controller which is because they’re easier to reach and easier to tell them apart from the bumper buttons. Sony did an amazing job with the controllers feel.

The only minus for the controls is that the Share and Options buttons are harder to find without looking because of the new touchpad, but with a little practice it will feel natural. And it will be worth it with the ability to share videos straight from your consoles and using the touchpad where available in game.

That’s about it so far, I can’t call this a review of the controller since I don’t have a game or the PS4 for that matter yet, so I don’t have a game that takes advantage of the share button or touchpad, but with my experience using the controller with NHL 14 on PS3 it feels like a nice upgrade over the Dualshark 3. But time will tell on how durable it really is because while the bottom feels good, I am worried it may be a little cheaply made which in turn could lead to dis-configuration of the padding down the line.

Notes:

The PS4 controller does not work with all games, there is a list on Reddit that has a list of games the controller works with, the only big game it doesn’t work on that I saw was disappointingly Grand Theft Auto V. The list of games it does work with includes but is not limited to is Battlefield 3 and 4, NHL 14, Assassins Creed 3 and 4, and also Grand Theft Auto IV.

The control also does not come with a USB cable you will need to buy a Micro B USB cable, which fortunately for me, my cell phone has one. If none of your USB cables work, try using your cell phone charger, it might actually work like mine did saving me a little money and frustration.

Madden 25 Next Gen info released with several videos and a trailer.

Last week EA released 3 blogs for Madden 25, one covering the o-line vs d-line battles and pass blocking, another dealing with running, and the last one was for player sense which deals with the intelligence of the players on the field. In all these sound like nice improvements, but hopefully there is more to come. But as it stands this is a great starting point for Madden 25 for next gen.

Recommendations for future Madden’s

NHL 13 - GM Connected Playoffs Game 4 - 2013-08-26 02-57-35

Madden 25 was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 back in August, and while it is a solid game. In fact it is a game I still plug in from time to time usually on Sunday’s before the weeks games. But despite it being a solid game, nothing overly impressive but solid, there are still plenty of things that drive me batty about this game.

1. Slow Menu’s

I didn’t really notice how slow the menu’s were in the game until I played NHL 14 and realized that the gripes I had with NHL 13 seeped into Madden 25. I am hoping that in the PS4/XBOX One version this is fixed. Because I couldn’t imagine that carrying over into the next generation with the consoles being 16 times more powerful. There would be no excuse for it in my mind.

Also add in the fact that the simulation speeds are slow as hell and you really have a major headache on your hands.

For this game to be a success on PS4 and Xbox One they really need to streamline things for Connected Careers, because none of this would fly on those consoles.

2. Connected Franchise

Connected Franchise is clearly intended for one player, and here is why I say that. Say for example you have two players in an offline Connected Careers mode, and you are at the re-signing stage of the off-season you can start out doing that process using either coach which is all fine and dandy but when you are done you have to switch coaches, and that is a bit of a wait, and then you have to skip to the actions screen to make sure there is not other issues to deal with before you go to re-sign your players.

That is just one example, of how time consuming and annoying it can be to do this mode. Tack on the added time for the draft because the process is the same for all parts of the off-season from the draft, re-signings and free agency. The switching is a major pain in the ass and it needs to be addressed in future maddens. Remember in the old Maddens where you could just go from one team, to the other and not have to press R3 or the right joy stick on the 360 to select the coach? That was so much faster and easier to do.

The mere fact that Madden 2005 had a better concept for multi-player franchise than Madden 25 is kind of laughable. The problem with this is the slow menu’s, if Madden could just make it as simple as scrolling from one user team to the other in the same screen it would A) be easier to navigate and B) faster to do so. And to me, that is a win win for all parties involved.

3. A Deeper Experience

Madden feels stale to me, Madden has not added a mode they really captured me in a way that would make the game feel fresh and new. And I think Madden needs that extra kick. Yesterday I posted a story on the Xbox One exclusive feature called CoachGlass which is meant to take advantage of Microsoft’s SmartGlass and really give Sony the middle finger. But that is a nice little feature, and it will give Xbox users a new feature they can try out and possibly like.

But even that won’t be enough to make the game feel new or fresh. The game needs a new feature, something that EA can work off of. And I am not talking about another mode, but maybe modifying an existing mode such as Connected Careers. I think this would be a great mode to work with, I am thinking that EA could go NFL Head Coach in this mode, add in meetings with coordinators, scouts, and so on.

The more I think of it, maybe make a deeper mode for coaches only, would probably fit this more than adding onto Connected Careers. God knows Connected Careers is already a mess in itself, adding something to slow it down would be a disaster. Regardless adding features that were in NFL Head Coach into it’s own game mode would feel fresh if it is done right AND added on to.

They could also make scouting a little better, I think every player should have some ratings revealed to one extent or another. Whether it is the C? extent or the actual rating should vary. You should also have strengths and weaknesses sections that can outline as few as one trait up to five traits. Believe it or not, these sections if done correctly can give you can idea if he fits the scheme, I remember NBA Live having this and I made decisions on how to draft bases on up to 3 lines of info I got, I mean sure there were other factors, but that weighed more heavily than ratings, player comparables and so on.

I am not as deep into football as I am hockey, so I can’t even begin to think of other ways to add depth to Madden, but someone needs to think of it since it can give us gamers something new and fun.
